How Relationships Built a $9 Million Sports ComplexThe Anderson YMCA Story
The Power of Trust in Fundraising
Fundraising for a major community project isn’t just about big donors or corporate sponsorships—it’s about relationships. Few people understand this better than Joe Drennon, who has been with the Anderson YMCA for over 42 years. When the YMCA set out to expand its Sports Complex, they faced enormous challenges, including COVID-19 shutdowns, construction delays, and skyrocketing costs.
Yet, through perseverance, personal outreach, and the trust built over decades, the campaign didn’t just survive—it exceeded expectations, raising over $9 million.
A Story of Resilience and Community Support
In 2019, a feasibility study projected the YMCA could raise $3.5 million to expand its Sports Complex by 30 acres. The campaign launched with high hopes—but within weeks, COVID-19 forced everything to shut down.
Rather than wait, Drennon and his team pivoted. They recognized that fundraising success wasn’t about chasing large corporate donations. Instead, it came down to community relationships and personal connections.
"People tend to give based on relationships and trust in the individual doing the asking," Drennon explained.
Their approach paid off:
✅ A long-time supporter and former soccer referee gave $250,000 to support the soccer program.
✅ The John Tucker family donated an additional 25 acres, expanding the project further.
✅ A donor who had grown up in the YMCA system led his family’s foundation to contribute $1 million—a gift that hadn’t even been identified in the initial study.
What started as a $3.5 million campaign grew into a $9 million success, transforming 50 acres of sports fields, cross-country trails, and recreational facilities for future generations.
